St Pierre sur Mer, France - Officially Recognised Nude Beach

St Pierre sur Mer offers a very spacious nude beach stretching for several kilometers which is backed by dunes and marshland - great for amateur ornithologists! It is located approximately 25km due east of Narbonne. Take the D118 north along the coast from Narbonne Plage until you reach St Pierre sur Mer after about 5km (see maps below) then take the track past the wind-surfing school to the beach. There is also a Naturist Campsite nearby called La Grande Cosse.

ST PIERRE SUR MER NUDE BEACH REPORTS:

1. This part of the Mediterranean coast is very flat with, in some cases, sand spits enclosing Etangs or lagoons, and salt marsh areas some of which dry out in the summer and flood in the winter. La Grande Cosse is set back a bit from the sea across dry scrub land (Garrigue?). The path across it has a couple of bridges to cross creeks that were still wet when we were there and forms a pleasant naturist walk (or cycle ride) to the nude beach. The beach is magnificent, wide with fine sand, about two miles of it all naturist between the nearest village St. Pierre sur Mer in the west to Les Cabanes de Fleury in the east. At the shoreline the dip into the sea is very gentle with fine firm sand under you feet all the way out to swimming depth, plenty of room for youngsters and the less confident. Again, possibly unusually, we found the sea a bit chilly with water temperatures around 20 degrees. - Mike Morley (full report here)


2. On arrival at La Grande Cosse in the summer of 2000 I was made feel most welcome at reception, and again ended up with my choice of sites. This campsite is formally laid out in a grid pattern, though if 10% of the place was occupied while I was there, that was it. On arrival at my pitch, I did the usual strip-and-put-up-tent, at the end of which I was well and truly ate. The combination of mud flats, evening and water all around had the place swarming with mosquitoes, who loved this 'fresh meat' to death. In future I took greater care in the evening, but still I carried blotches for most of my stay there. This site is well appointed, with tennis, soccer, archery, b'ball, volleyball, bikes, pools (1.60m, 0.40m), excellent restaurant (takeaway closed while I was there), supermarket & bar. Dinner was excellent, but with the nippy evenings always clothed - it may vary at other times. It is about a 10min walk to the nude beach, with little cover and small border of dunes. The beach itself is about 2km, though there were few on the beach itself, as I got there with some windy/stormy weather. The last day I stayed was hot, and the water was grand for cooling off in, but not too many were braving the waves to go further out. One interesting consequence of the low-lying site is the warning which is given that 'if it rains, head for the beach', as the place is prone to flooding. One Swiss family I met told me that the previous year the tents were inundated after a thunderstorm, with a few inches of water on the site! - Irish Naturist


3. This is a resort which has its 'fans' and its 'detractors'. At its best it is superb - hot, sandy and lots of Mediterranean sea and beaches. However the mistral can blow .... and being on the edge of a salt marsh nature reserve - the wind comes straight in. Shade is at a premium on the nude beach - there are no trees but there is one small cafe with parasols - SO BRING YOUR OWN SHADE - as it can get blisteringly hot. To access the beach at La Grande Cosse (which means The Great Laziness), you need to walk across the nature reserve. This is a ten minute naturist stroll past WW2 bunkers, drainage ditches, over little wooden bridges etc. On the beach in normal weather is a beach cafe. - Heritage


4. We were staying for two weeks a place called La Grande Cosse. We stayed in a caravan and went to the shop and bars nude, and there was a good family atmosphere. - Grunt, 2004
